Three wrestlers at York College in Pennsylvania have been infected with herpes gladitorum and they’re pinning the blame on their coaches. They’ve filed a civil lawsuit, claiming coaches did not prevent herpes-ridden teammates from competing, allowing the infection to spread. NCAA rules stipulate “”in order to participate the wrestler must be free from systemic symptoms such as fever and malaise.” The school, however, argues that the plaintiffs have no case since the rules don’t specifically mention lesions and sores.
The symptoms of “wrestlers’ herpes?” Flu-like symptoms, a rash, crusting, itching and pussing around the eye. Not exactly the swagger athletes are going for. We’re behind you, York wrestlers… even if at least 10 feet away.
