Who’s behind the latest vandalism spree at University of California, Santa Cruz? When the sun came up Thursday morning, the few UCSCers left on campus during winter break were left to survey overnight damages, including:
- broken windows at the University House and Owl’s Nest Cafe,
- road spikes on Meyer Drive,
- damaged construction equipment, and slashed tires and broken windows on 20 different vehicles,
- graffiti in residential halls and parking garages, which, according to the Mercury News, “expressed opposition to the prison system, law enforcement and campus growth.”
The university has yet to track down the culprits, although suspicion is currently pinned to a group of tree-sitting activists protesting UCSC’s Long-Range Development Plan, as well as a group of animal-rights activists who carried out a series of attacks in the area earlier this year. May we present a third suspect: the group irate at still being on campus during the holidays.
