UT Underpaying Female Profs

It’s the 21st century–are we really still arguing about equal pay for equal work? Sadly, yes: The Dallas Morning News reports that a task force has found female professors at the University of Texas earn, on average, $9,000 less than their male counterparts.
But gender discrimination isn’t limited to the dollar bills, ya’ll. Investigators also reported that, among assistant professors hired in 1997, only 36 percent of women had been promoted to a tenured associate professorship within seven years, compared to 56 percent of men who had been granted tenure in the same amount of time. Women were also more likely to report experiencing discrimination on the job, and 14 percent said they had been sexually harassed. The study recommends instituting more family-friendly work policies, as well as spending $1.6 million just to bring female professors’ salaries on par with men’s. While not everything can be bigger in Texas, the least UT can do is make it even.
