University President Gives Up Bonus

If you were offered a six-figure bonus, would you take it? President James Ramsey of the University of Louisville turned down $113,857 in favor of the $700 raise faculty and staff receive. (Feel guilty?) Ramsey’s decision was both practical — the university’s been hit by state budget cuts and this will save money — and a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the faculty.
On a salary of $455,431, Ramsey shouldn’t be scrounging for food without his bonus. Even so, he’s paid a fraction of the top salary for a U.S. college president. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s most recent survey (from 2005-2006), nine presidents’ base salaries are over a million dollars and 12 pass the mark when benefits are factored in. The highest base salary? Donald Ross of Lynn University’s $5,674,184 jackpot. Whoo-ee.
