University of California Better Get Ready For French Revolution-Redux

Once again, shit has hit the fan within the Bear State. A union representing 8,500 University of California service workers began a five-day strike today over salary disputes. Josh Keller of The Chronicle of Higher Education News Blog (for the record, a fellow UC Berkeley alumni that used to kick my ass in Scrabble before Scrabulous was cool) pretty much gives the impression that UC campuses might have trouble functioning during the next week.

The union, which is affiliated with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, known as AFSCME, represents bus drivers, cooks, custodians, and other service workers on all 10 campuses of the university system. The union and the system have failed for nearly a year to reach an agreement over wage increases.

To be honest, this controversy has become a source of embarrassment for the UCs. In 2007, Danny Glover of Lethal Weapon fame cancelled a scheduled appearance at Berkeley; last month William Jefferson Clinton (former wannabe first hubbie) used the whole “I support the workers” excuse to get out of a speaking gig. But if the striking union workers really want to stick it to the University of California, maybe they should take advantage of whole July 14th Storming of the Bastille anniversary spirit and attack UC Berkeley’s fortress-like Campanile.
