The med school at the University of Michigan, accustomed to using dogs in one of its courses, decided to switch to human models after an animal rights group got fussy. Though most med schools favor either models or cadavers, UMich’s Advanced Trauma and Life Support course thought dogs were the best bet.

Doctors operated on the dogs to learn skills to save the lives of hospital patients brought in with severe trauma, such as a gunshot wound or automobile accident. U-M officials said the course’s instructor, Dr. Richard Burney, is an experienced surgeon who believes using dogs is the best way to teach the techniques.

Am I the only one who’s confused about why dogs would ever give a more realistic picture of how the human body works than, well, a human body?
