Robots can be Guitar Heroes, Too

We love video games. We love robots. Thus, we really love this “Guitar Hero”-playing robot created by a group of engineering undergrads from Texas A&M, dubbed “Slashbot.” Slashbot has five mechanical fingers to hold down the frets, one for strumming, and is able to “see” video signals from the Playstation 2 console so it knows when to strum. A video of Slashbot tackling Eric Johnson’s “Cliffs of Dover” has drawn over 120,000 hits on YouTube since it was posted last week, and Aggies were lining up yesterday to duel the robot at yesterday’s A&M Demo Day. But, even for a robot, Slashbot is only human–its accuracy rating hovers around 97 percent on the “Expert” level, which is only as good as we’ve been able to do (on, um, “Easy”).
