To Carry or Not to Carry

So I read this article about students who are fighting for a law to be passed to allow them to carry guns on campus. Before I give you my opinion on this, here’s a little background:
The second amendment is the part of the Bill of Rights that says: ”a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” In Tennessee, state Representative Stacey Campfield couldn’t pass a bill allowing students to carry concealed firearms on public college campuses. Ever since the Virginia Tech shootings, similar bills have failed to pass in numerous state legislatures (which I find slightly ironic).
So, here’s my stance: I am against students carrying firearms on campus (I’m also against people owning guns). I agree with the government—guns don’t belong in college classrooms. What do we do to have fun at school? We party. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable at the thought of someone with a Solo cup in one hand and a holster on his waist. I think that to prevent another Virginia Tech from happening, professors need to pay more attention to their students and security needs to be beefed up on college campuses.
My campus is extremely safe; I can literally walk across campus at 2 a.m. and not worry about being shanked. I have to call in guests to security because they won’t let people in who aren’t students at GC. I consider myself blessed for that and maybe I am a little biased because of that, but even my campus has made changes to the system in response to Virginia Tech. They instituted a new program where we’ll get text messages should there be a security emergency, as well as an emergency drill where we all have to go into the hallway until the situation is under control.
Bottom line: students should not be allowed to carry guns on campuses, private or public.
