The Daily Prereq: University of Iowa Curbs Thirsty Thursdays

Talk about a buzzkill. The University of Iowa is planning to add nearly 100 Friday courses next fall in an attempt to put a damper on Thursday night partying in downtown Iowa City. The decision came after a 2007 University of Missouri study showed that students with Friday classes drank half as much alcohol weekly as those who didn’t. To ensure students don’t just pack on the Monday-through-Thursday obligations, UI will slate a number of mandatory classes for majors for the Friday slots. Professors aren’t exactly looking forward to getting out of bed on Fridays, either, which is why UI administrators are bribing departments with $20 for every student signing up for end-of-week classes. Looks like they’re going to have to settle for a two-day weekend like the rest of us.
