A wave of pro-China, anti-Tibetan-freedom protests have been popping up at campuses across the U.S., forcing students with ties to the Asian conflict to choose sides. With the international spotlight on China leading up to this summer’s Olympic games in Beijing, tensions in the international community (like disrupted Olympic torch relays and talks of boycotting the Opening Ceremonies) are high, and they’re spilling into classrooms. At a University of Southern California lecture hall, students of mostly Chinese descent hurled accusatory questions and an empty water bottle at a visiting Tibetan monk. And at Duke University, a Chinese student who attempted to mediate between pro-Tibet and pro-China student groups was called a traitor and was forced into police protection, while her family in China went into hiding after the Chinese police broadcast her parents’ home address.
