Not everyone gets their college choice right the first time around. But is transferring to another school really going to solve all your problems? A new study from the National Survey of Student Engagement (via the Chronicle of Higher Ed) found that transfer students have a harder time getting involved and interacting on campus than classmates who were there from the get-go. Specifically, when seniors who had transferred were compared to “native” seniors (who had stayed at the same school all four years), the survey showed:

But don’t get down on your chances of collegiate happiness if you’re planning on transferring. Many schools, including the University of Southern California, University of California-Santa Barbara, and Texas Tech, have recently stepped up resources for transfer students to ease the transition.

I wish that my recent transfer to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville would have been easier. It was really difficult to get any classes, a student ID, and just enrolling was a pain. I felt like the school was trying to push me off as a new freshman, when I already knew the ballgame and just wanted access to education.

Almost at the spring semester, I still need to find more scholarships and clear some transfer courses; a pain for anyone that has to focus on working and schooling first.

Dude, that sucks! As bad as switching high schools midway is, switching college (with all those things you mentioned) sounds even worse. Looks like schools are responding to the survey results, though–hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more transfer-student programs in the future.

As a college transfer student (after freshman year) and high school transfer student (after freshman year), the college transition is a lot easier if you take the initiative. For me, I was getting in to my dream school, so I took every opportunity and made the most of it. If you do that, you’ll be fine.
