From Birkin to vintage, the big trend in college grad gifts this year is the bag. Practical for both guys and girls, a smart briefcase or a versatile purse is the perfect present because it can be used for work, travel, or play. Some parents and relatives plan to make commencement extra special by handing down a much-coveted (and often very expensive) designer bag that they once owned.

If you’re thinking about buying a new tote yourself, invest in a good quality one, however much the initial budget pinch may hurt. You’ll get much more use of out it than a cheap one. Opt for leather or nylon instead of cloth, which can look dingy and unprofessional. For a stylish alternative, look for a carry-on in a solid color, with extra room, so it can carry all your necessities for work as well as after-hours.
