Student Stand-Off at New School

Whose library is it anyway? More than 100 New School students have taken over the Graduate Faculty building in Manhattan, enraged by plans to demolish the New School library, and irate at New School president Bob Kerrey’s attempt to cling to power despite a faculty vote of no confidence. And by “take over,” we don’t mean “showed up with blankets and popcorn”–these kids are full-on occupying the space, despite security barricades, scuffles with the cops, and President Kerrey’s attempts to negotiate down their list of demands.

NYPD officers have attempted to access the building through a fire escape, and at least one student has already been arrested. For up-to-the-minute updates on what’s happening, check out the rebels’ blog over at New School in Exile. And stay strong, New Schoolers! There aren’t nearly enough students willing to spend their holiday break barricading for what they believe in.

UPDATE: President Kerrey has announced that he’s canceling his chat with The New School’s University Student Senate Forum tonight “for safety and security reasons.” Scared of his own students? The man is a Vietnam vet! Just add it to the list of reasons why this may not be the right line of work for Kerrey.
