State College PD Keeps PSU Safe in 140 Characters or Less

E-mail alerts are so 2004. To reach today’s plugged-out, on-the-go collegians, the Penn State University-patrolling State College Police Department is testing out a new alert system, powered by kid-approved microblogging site Twitter. PSU students can sign up to receive 140-character, byte-sized messages about everything from recent campus crime activity and weather alerts to when and where you’ll find cops out patrolling the State College streets, according to The Daily Collegian. It’s not replacing those long-winded warning e-mails sent out by the school–the blog instead is meant to “get word out” and “be supportive…not intrusive.” Considering most college-town police departments’ idea of high-tech is a Taser, we hope the State College PD keeps using its Twitter blog for good, not evil…and not for posting 15 entries about the details of their breakfast donuts.

Congrats once again to the good folks at the State College, Police Department. The Twitter blog will certainly benefit those who sign up for the service.

State College Police Chief, Tom King, wrote the foreword for the first college safety book ever published; Protect Yourself at College. As the author of this book, I know first hand that Chief King and his officers are committed to to keeping students safe.
