While it’s not the kind of headline to be proud of, the Longhorn Greek system is in the spotlight for hazing once again. A judge has ruled that the national and University of Texas chapters of Sigma Alpha Epsilon must pay $16.2 million to the parents of Tyler Cross, a freshman SAE pledge who fell off a balcony and died as a result of hazing rituals. After Cross’s death two years ago, an investigation found he and other SAE pledges were made to drink half a gallon of liquor on the night of his death. Neither the UT chapter nor the national SAE organization responded to lawsuits filed by the Cross family. SAE remains active at UT but with under strict provisions from the university.
