Reading List: Students’ Changing Views on the Isreali/Palestinian Conflict

In the months since Israel’s attack on Gaza, students at many colleges have become more vocal in their support for the Palestinian cause. An article in today’s Inside Higher Ed chronicles the shift at schools like Emory, which hosted its first “Israeli Apartheid Week” this year, and NYU, where students implored administrators to give scholarships to Palestinians.
The Israeli/Palestinian conflict is a touchy subject. But whether you lean pro-Israeli or pro-Palestinian, one definite positive has emerged from the debate: students are being encouraged to think critically about the issues and challenge any assumptions they’ve held. Bruce Braun, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota, describes this new discourse well: “One of the things that’s really interesting on campuses right now is students are beginning to ask, ‘How are we connected to what’s happening in the Middle East? How do we transform our institutions?’”
