Stanford Class of 2008, you do NOT get a car. Oprah Winfrey showed up at Stanford’s commencement ceremony yesterday in a stylin’ black-and-red robe to offer graduates her words of wisdom. While half the class was hoping for “Oprah’s Favorite College Things” and accompanying gift bag, Oprah instead recounted her long road to a college degree (she left Tennessee State University one course shy of graduation, but when she returned as their honorary speaker in 1987, turned in her final paper and earned her diploma) and gave students two self-help books: Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, and Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future. Oprah’s goddaughter, Kirby Bumpus, daughter of gal-pal Gayle King, was a member of Stanford’s graduating class. I’m sure she’ll enjoy driving her new jet or whatever being the closest thing Oprah has to a child gets you.
