No Props for Proposition 8 from California Colleges

Eliminating the right of same-sex couples to marry will not only slap the civil rights movement in the face — it’ll also slow down intellectual progress. This is the resounding message coming from several California college heads across the state, including Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau of UC-Berkeley and Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of UC-Irvine’s law school. In a statement written to the Berkeley campus, Birgeneau writes that the passing of Prop. 8 would essentially drive all the talented gay intellectuals to states such as Massachusetts and New York, where same-sex marriage is recognized and where schools such as Harvard, MIT and Columbia would welcome the smarties with open arms:
The constitutional right to marry in the State of California enhances UC Berkeley’s ability to attract and retain the very best students, staff and faculty, with the promise of equal treatment under the laws of our state.
Chemerinsky, a renowned constitutional scholar, said that if Prop. 8 was approved, “progress will be halted,” and if defeated, “I believe that within my lifetime we will see a majority of states allow same-sex couples to marry,” reported the OC Register. Many “No on 8″ groups are joining forces on 30 university campuses, including UC Santa Cruz, and a survey released last week from the Public Policy Institute of California shows Prop. 8 being defeated 52-44. We’d hate to see what would happen if all the gays left California.
