No matter how much we talk up colleges’ diversity, there’s one ethnic group perpetually stuck with barely-a-single-digit representation among student bodies everywhere: Native Americans/American Indians/Alaskan Natives. (We weren’t sure which was the right-est, so we included all of ‘em.) But despite tiny relative percentages, these groups have more than doubled their numbers on campuses in the last 30 years, according to a report released by the Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics. That brings their total to a whopping 1.1 percent of all college students in America…which is good, but not great just yet. The report goes on to say that 26 percent of Native Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 were enrolled in college in 2006, compared to 58 percent of Asian ethnic groups, 41 percent of Caucasians, 33 percent of African-Americans, and 27 percent of Hispanics. For more (WAY more) statistics on American Indians’ and Alaska Natives’ progress in higher education, check out the full report here.
