No, not that kind of swinging (that we know of). But for all the talk of how Virginia universities could swing the traditionally red state for Obama, Liberty University is pushing to register as many of its 11,000 students to vote in Virginia, in hopes of ensuring a McCain victory in November. Liberty University is a fundamentalist Baptist school founded by Jerry Falwell and currently run by his son, Jerry Falwell, Jr. It’s known for its ski enthusiasts and prohibitions against attending dances, hosting members of the opposite sex in one’s dorm room, and wearing flip-flops to class. Fun!
So should Virginia’s Obamaniacs be concerned? University of Virginia Shea Connolly seems to think so, noting that the 2006 Virginia Senate race was decided by a margin of fewer than 10,000 votes. Liberty RAs are handing out voter registration forms, and Falwell wrote an e-mail to students declaring, “Liberty University’s 11,000 students and 4,000 faculty and staff could cause Liberty to become known as the university that elected a president!” That’s certainly better than being known as the university that teaches dinosaurs may have caught a ride in Noah’s ark.
