Less Class, Less Gas

Students love a four-day class schedule — especially when their three-day weekends begin on Friday. With gas prices now more than $4 a gallon, students commuters have another reason to celebrate the four-day class week: more money in the bank. USA Today reports several community colleges are cutting one day of classes so they can save students a long trip to campus. At traditional four-year colleges, where some have already mastered the art of dodging Friday classes, students are finding other ways to avoid the gas pump. At UC-Riverside, more students are using mass transit or carpooling with friends. And liberal arts school Ripon College is giving 96 of 300 freshmen mountain bikes if they leave their cars at home. Live strong, Ripon freshies.
