Just Butt Out

Increasing cigarette taxes, no smoking indoors, and a big old frown from society in general — these are just some adversities smokers across the country have faced and continue to face for years. But no ciggie break after a grueling lecture?! Even as a non-smoker, that just seems evil. Starting this Tuesday the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville will join the growing list of U.S. colleges and universities who have banned on-campus smoking. The new policy is the result of the school’s “Fresh” marketing campaign that encourages all members of the university community to put it out or get called-out — by those who catch them.

That’s because the school has chosen to adopt a “model of compliance” policy, which means there will be no punishment for those who light up. However, if anyone does get caught puffing away by someone on-campus, they are free to gently remind them the perpetrator of the new policy. Besides promoting a healthier student body, Univ. of Arkansas Chancellor Lawrence Davis says a benefit of the ban is that it discourages marijuana smokers who use hide weed in cigars. Nice try, colleges. If I can offer one piece of advice, I’d make sure the dorm smoke detectors are working properly.
