Forget waiting until November–voters can already go online to see which presidential candidate has already won the hearts and minds of the Internet. According to the Washington Post, social-networking users (including the college crowd) are overwhelming in their support for Obama, while McCain’s soc-net rating is barely tepid. On Facebook, there are over a million Obama supporters, while McCain supporters are an exclusive crew of just over 150,000. Similar sentiments are evident on MySpace, where Obama counts more than 401,000 friends to almost 56,000 for McCain. Then there’s YouTube, where the race isn’t even close. McCain’s channel has just over 200 videos with 3.7 million views, while over 1,100 videos on Obama’s channel have been viewed 53.4 million times.

So what’s a McCainiac to do? If you’re Patrick Ruffini, a former webmaster for the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2004, you create a Facebook group called “The John McCain Facebook Challenge,” urging fellow Republicans to visit McCain’s page and become a supporter. Just over 6,000 members have rallied to his call. As Obama has shown, all this online support usually translates into online donations. And unfortunately for the little guy, the most popular boy at school usually becomes the prom king.
