A raging fire on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus left the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house burnt to a crisp earlier today, reported The Capital Times. Firefighters had trouble getting the flames that enveloped the 1890 Victorian home under control, but the 25 frat members who lived inside all got out safely. Unfortunately, however, all their books, school items and personal possessions perished in the conflagration.
And all this in the middle of finals week!
Damages are estimated at $750,000 and chances are the building won’t be renovated. The Sigma Phi Epsilon members are searching for temporary homes as they struggle to finish the school year and are receiving aid and support from the UW community in the form of funding, study aides and counseling.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated and, while we hate to be the cynics, we can’t help wondering if this wasn’t just a warped ploy to get a pity extension (or maybe a pity “A”) because the studying wasn’t going so well. With all the depravity that’s been linked to Greek orgs lately, we wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.
