Not every college can bring Hollywood to campus, but that doesn’t mean they can’t bring their campus to Hollywood. The Los Angeles Times reports that a growing number of colleges including UT-Austin and Emerson College are setting up shop in the City of Angels in an effort to open up doors for students interested in pursuing careers in film and television. The setups allow students to spend a semester taking screenwriting and production classes in Hollywood and Burbank, while also working directly on shows such as ABC’s Brothers and Sisters. Stephen Tropiano, director of Ithaca College’s program, said the semester in L.A. gives students the opportunity to figure out if working in the film and television industry is right for them.

Last April, Emerson spent $12 million to buy a parking lot on Sunset Boulevard, where it plans to build housing, classroom, and production facilities for their future “domestic abroad” students. More than half of students participating in the Los Angeles programs find themselves staying in the city with the hopes of fulfilling their big Hollywood dreams. Watch out, UCLA and USC — it looks like the competition to become the next Ari Gold just got fiercer.

In fact, says head of marketing and research at StudentUniverse, “As students procrastinate, we get more competitive.” Affordable traveling and a reward for slacking off. Now all you need is a place to go. […]
