In a 55-page lawsuit, Hakan Yalincak claims New York University harassed and defrauded him by withholding his bachelor’s degree. But it’s not astronomical library fines or missed course credit keeping Yalincak from officially taking his place among NYU’s Class of 2005–Yalincak was convicted of swindling $7 million from investors while he was an NYU student, and he’s currently serving a prison term for bank and wire fraud. Even less endearing, we’re sure, was the time Yalincak told NYU he and his family would donate $21 million (in non-existent money) to the school, and NYU promised to thank the Yalincaks by naming a lecture hall after them (NYU is still in court trying to figure out what to do with the $1.25 million Yalincak gave as a down payment). Yalincak is asking the school to change several F’s to A’s to muster enough credit to graduate, and he’s accusing the school of treating him with “vindictiveness, taunting, and derision.” Hmmm, that wouldn’t have anything to do with false promises, financial scheming, and public humiliation, would it?
