Fightin’ Words About Frats in E-mail Hoax

When University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students got an e-mail earlier this week bashing the Greek system, it probably didn’t come as much of a surprise–after all, what’s more of a slap in administrators’ faces than student-run, semi-autonomous campus groups that promote large doses of unauthorized fun? But while the sender was listed as “Chancellor Richard Herman,” this particular anti-frat screed wasn’t sent by administrators at all. In fact, the paragraph-long missive arguing that the Greek scene “degrades campus life” came from an unidentified spammer who happened to get his or her hands on the e-mail addresses of every Illini in the system.

So who’s got it out for the Greeks? The only clue is that, well, it’s probably not someone in a fraternity or sorority (duh)–the sender signed off as “GDI,” which stands for “God-Damn Independent” (thanks, Urban Dictionary!) That narrows it down to approximately 55 percent of the student body. Although administrators were quick to circulate a counterstrike e-mail distancing themselves from those opinions, the incident is already sparking some healthy debate over Greek life on a campus where frats and sororities rule the roost. As for the Greeks, well, they’ve never been scared of a little scandal. Rush will go on! That’s some triumph of the college spirit.
