Facebook Remembers It Was Once a College Site

Remember back in the day when Facebook was exclusive to college students. No pesky 13-year-olds or meddling parents–not to mention potential employers–to avoid? (Just that weirdo in your bio class.) Well, those days are long gone. While college kids may no longer be the sole proprietors of Facebook, the site has released some pretty useful apps for its original audience.
Here’s a brief list courtesy of the Silicon Alley Insider:
1) CourseFeed is an app that creates a page for each of your courses and allows you to post notes and link with your school’s online content system, where your professor posts assignments, class notes, or announcements. Now you can cut class without worrying who you’re going to bother for notes later on.
2) PodClass lets you record a class and post it on Facebook, giving you yet another way to skip class without missing the lecture (better hope attendance doesn’t count for part of your grade).
3) Schools is the third app to generate buzz. But this one is different in that it’s subscription-based (no worries, they’re trying to get your school to pay for it).
Why would universities pay for the School app? We’re not really sure, but we do know that the functionality is pretty cool:
a social utility that lets students show each other not only what courses they are taking, but other campus affiliations such as student organizations, athletic teams, majors, and residence halls. Once it knows all of this about a student, it lets her sort friends and classmates by who shares the most things in common with her.
So while your page may be littered with Zombies and Vampires and Horoscopes and SuperWall and…oh god, the list of useless apps just GOES ON…maybe these new apps will actually help raise your GPA. At least they can make you feel better about wasting time on Facebook instead of writing that Lit paper.
