It’s a real detective story! Step one: An anonymous, fake newspaper reported that Massachussetts’ Cambridge College was closing for financial reasons and criticized Chancellor Eileen Brown. Step two: An anonymous, real person sent the newspaper to lots of important dudes, including trustees, donors, and faculty. Step three: Cambridge College refuted the newspaper’s claims, which could destroy the school if taken seriously. Not enough? The college didn’t think so, either. According to The Boston Globe, administrators have hired an ex-FBI agent to expose the culprits.

An ex-FBI agent! Exposition! This is a thrilling plotline. As reported in The Globe, “some faculty members said the college was overreacting and accused officials of using scare tactics to target critics.” That is possible. But I seriously need to know how this turns out. Keep at it, detective!

What the Globe didn’t report: Jonathan Larsen (chair of Cambridge College’s board of trustees) is the former editor of New Times magazine and the Village Voice. Shouldn’t he have a little more tolerance for anonymous pamphleteering?
