Everyone Wants to be Robert Morris (University)

Who is this Robert Morris, and why does everyone want to be his university? Robert Morris College in Chicago is planning to bring a complaint against Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania over the right to call itself (also) Robert Morris University. According to the (PA) Robert Morris U. Sentry, the Chicago Robert Morris wants to make the institutional leap to calling itself a university, but they can’t, because the PA Robert Morris has already staked legal claim to the name “Robert Morris University.” Confusing! But since the two schools are separated by one time zone, two states, and an eight-hour drive, Chicago Robert Morris officials argue that it won’t be too hard to figure out (although, in the process of typing this paragraph, I’m already lost).

So why does Robert Morris have two schools fighting over his name, when the naming rights of, say, fifteenth president James Buchanan go unclaimed? According to all-knowing Wikipedia, Robert Morris, also known as the “Financier of the Revolution,” signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution, and was critical in funding American efforts in the Revolutionary War. Come on, Robert Morris (Chicago) and Robert Morris (PA)–if Robert Morris (person) were still around, he’d want us to all band together in our common interest, kicking the British the hell out of our country. And isn’t that what is most important?
