Commencement Controversy at Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s 2009 commencement speaker is…President Barack Obama! But Notre Dame is a Catholic school. Obama has some, well, liberal views. He might be the most powerful man in the world, but some seniors are not pleased.

“I don’t think he belongs as a speaker at Notre Dame,” [senior Emily Toates] said. “I understand that he’s the president, but at the same time, his views and his policy-making are completely out of line with the mission of the University.”

Many students who identify with Notre Dame’s Catholic mission think Obama’s pro-choice stance makes him a poor pick. Others are thrilled the president will address them on their graduation day, even if they disagree with his views. But the anti-Obama sentiment raises the question of what should factor into schools’ commencement speaker choices. Should ideals be an issue?
