MICHIGAN QB passes to MICHIGAN WR for a touchdown… and the crowd goes yawn. In an attempt to generate more enthusiasm for college fantasy sports, CBSSports.com announced they will start using college players’ real names in the upcoming 2008 college fantasy football game. Previously, the fantasy game designated players with generic terms like “FLORIDA QB,” garnering little attention from fans. The change comes after a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision stated that an entity does not own the rights to names and stats in the public domain, including players’ names and real statistics.
The NCAA isn’t totally on-board with the decision, stating NCAA bylaws are being infringed on when CBS uses the likeness of college athletes. However, the NCAA isn’t going to press too hard. The upgraded college fantasy game should be great exposure and could possibly lead to future college fantasy teams. Cough, ahem, Fantasy Quidditch?
