Campus Convenience Store Profiteers

Think your college couldn’t possibly find more ways to nickel-and-dime you? Hey, how about the campus store, where you stock up on powdered noodles and diet Red Bull? According to the Ohio State Lantern (via The Paper Trail), the Ohio State campus store, the Marketplace, is seriously marking up prices on college-diet staples like water and Oreos. Check their side-by-side comparison between the Marketplace and local grocery store chain Kroger on the following foodstuffs:
- Mott’s applesauce: $3.35 (Marketplace) vs. $1.80 (Kroger)
- Froot Loops: $4.99 (Marketplace) vs. $2.99 (Kroger)
- Oreos: $5.85 (Marketplace) vs. $2.75 (Kroger)
- Pringles: $2.25 (Marketplace) vs. $1.05 (Kroger)
- Half-gallon of milk: $2.79 (Marketplace) vs. $1.99 (Kroger)
- Peanut butter: $3.89 (Marketplace) vs. $3.09 (Kroger)
- Dasani water: $4.99 (Marketplace) vs. $3.89 (Kroger)
The downside? You can’t pay for food at Kroger with swipes. Why that isn’t accepted as legal currency in every college-town grocery store across the country is a mystery to me.
