Boozin’ Through College

One of the reasons I decided to go to an all girls’ school for college was so that I could get a great education. Over the years, I’ve noticed that because I’m in an all girls’ school, it’s probably true that the quality of education that I’m getting is higher than I would be getting in a coed school. I think that had I gone to a coed school, I would not hesitate to party at least twice a week, slack off more, and probably pledge to a sorority. I also think that because I socialize with women, work with women, and am taught by women, I’m developing as a person much better than I would at a coed school. I think I would be even more distracted in class and get fewer good grades. Even when there is a guy in my class, it’s just distracting and frustrating; I think to myself, you’re on my turf now buddy…why are you even here? There are two guys in my philosophical ethics class and every single time they say something, I have to shift my thinking, and I just sit there wondering, how did you even come up with that? Did I give you permission to speak? 95 percent of my friends from high school are in a coed college, and the amount of pictures I see on Facebook of them partying it up is astonishing. I’m not discouraging the time-honored tradition of the college party at all, because I’ve been to a few great parties at Georgian Court, but sometimes I think to myself, is that all you do? I’m also a commuter student, but I’ve spent a few nights in the dorms and the amount of stupidity and unnecessary drama that goes on in the dorms is just ridiculous, and it seems as if everybody knows your business. Not to mention the extra $5,000 for room and board.
According to an article from Delaware Online and USA Today, college students drink more in coed dorms. The study surveyed 510 college students from five different campuses with, 87 percent of whom were placed in coed dorms. 41.5 percent of those students from the coed dorms reported weekly binge drinking, while 17.6 percent of the single-sex dorm residents reported binge drinking. The article also says that 90% of college campuses today have coed dorms.
Let me just say that I don’t have a problem with coed campuses or coed dorms. I think it’s a matter of responsibility to choose whether or not you want to put yourself in a situation where it’s a choice between drinking and not drinking. If a dean is confused as to why their campus is such a huge party school, they should take a hard look at their dorm situation. It seems as if party schools are really proud of that label, and the students feel that they should protect that reputation. I don’t think it’s something to be proud of; I would feel slightly embarrassed if when I told somebody the name of my college and the first thing they said was, “oh that’s a party school.”
So what do you think, do coed dorms have any influence on drinking? And should coed dorms even be allowed?
