Berkeley Oaks Have Been Cut, Tree-Sitters Continue Occupation

UC Berkeley students returning to campus this fall may be surprised when they look up. The Los Angeles Times reports that four tree-sitters continue their protest of a university construction project by occupying a redwood tree on-campus. The trees they’ve been protesting to save are quickly being cut down, so they’ve packed up and moved to another perch. UC officials, hoping to end the protest once and for all, have begun to chop down the occupied redwood, leaving only the platforms where the tree-sitters have been, well, sitting.
The protest began in May 2008 when the university announced they’d be building a new athletic facility. In effect, a grove of trees adjacent to the construction site would have to be destroyed. Months of back-and-forth negotiations and a bucket load of crap (literally) later, a judge gave Cal the green light to resume construction. You’d think after the oaks began disappearing, the protesters would be thwarted. But, as we all know, hippies will be hippies.
