Alpha Kappa Alpha Celebrates 100 Years

What’s 100 years old and pink and green all over? AKA Barbie, that’s what! Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first black sorority in the U.S., celebrated its centennial this past weekend at a convention in Washington state. More than 25,000 Alphas attended, including sisters who have been part of the sorority for 75 years. Famous Alphas include singer Alicia Keys, civil rights leaders Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks, and actresses Jada Pinkett-Smith and Phylicia Rashad. Founded at Howard University, today the sorority boasts more than 200,000 members. To commemorate the historic event, Barbie has made a special AKA collector’s edition doll that’s African-American and clad in pink and green, the sorority’s colors. Hopefully when I’m 89, I’ll still be partying with my sorority sisters. If I do, I hope I look as fierce as these ladies. You know what they say: you can take the girl out of the sorority house, but you can’t take the sorority out of the girl.
