Alex is an Insincere Mess in Episode 2 of College Life

I was disappointed that Alex dropped out of the project because she is possibly one of the most honest, real characters I’ve observed so far. Granted, she’s a mess. That’s what makes her interesting to watch. C’mon, was I the only one who heard her calling her friend “the perfect guy” just one week into things? Then she goes to a party at Mr. Perfect’s house, gets stupid drunk and causes a scene when he calls her his girlfriend. Honey, unless I misunderstood what you told the camera, you were at his party, at his house, throwing a fit because he wouldn’t let you hit on all the hot guys under his roof! Things can get confusing when you’re an 18-year-old freshman from a small town in Texas let loose on the big bad world. I get that. Been there, done it, soooo glad it’s over.
I may be unpopular for expressing this opinion but, I felt the scene with her friend’s car crash lacked sincerity. I don’t know how well Alex knew her or how she processes grief. However, judging by earlier scenes where she is losing it over a test or simply being falling-down drunk, her reaction felt hollow and forced. It bothers me when a teenager dies and suddenly everyone at her high school was her best friend and everyone is uttering empty phrases like, “I remember her as being so alive.” If someone close to my younger sister died, I don’t see her sitting dry-eyed at the computer, calmly looking at photos of the crash and steadily filming it.
I hesitated to share my honest views about Alex at first because I don’t want to come off as harsh or judgmental. However, this is supposed to be “real, not reality TV,” right? So I’m gonna keep it real ‘cuz sometimes that’s how you’ve gotta play it in college. The stress was pretty evident from the first scene with Alex; she usually has an anxious facial expression, rarely looks directly into the camera and is often slightly out of breath when she talks. Also, for a communication major on scholarship, she has some difficulty expressing herself, yes? When I started college, I tested out of English 101 and 102. Wanting to get through as quickly as possible, I took the pass only to find that I didn’t know the proper format for writing a college paper because I had skipped that class. I think Alex was a big fish in a small pond back home and just needs time to adjust. Maybe she’ll even come back to the show.
